Is your school library failing to ignite imaginations?

Case Study

This ‘Forest of Knowledge’ Will Make You Rethink libraries!

Is your school library failing to ignite imaginations? At Playscheme, we know that primary school libraries shouldn’t just be repositories of books, they should be portals to adventure! We recently had the privilege of transforming Stamford Bridge Primary School’s uninspiring space into the breathtaking ‘Forest of Knowledge’, a themed library that’s proving to be anything but ordinary.

The Context: A Space Crying Out for Change

Let’s be honest, the existing library at Stamford Bridge Primary School wasn’t exactly inspiring. It was a space that didn’t reflect the vibrant energy of the school – a bit like a dusty old dictionary gathering cobwebs. The headteacher and children were determined to change this, to create a school library that was as dynamic and engaging as the learning that took place within its walls. They wanted something unique, something that would make children excited to pick up a book and dive into a story.

Enter Playscheme: We Don’t Just Build, We Create Worlds

Stamford Bridge Primary School approached Playscheme, and we were thrilled to take on the challenge. Our mission: to work closely with the children and staff to design a primary school library that:

  • Inspires & entices
  • Is well organised & multi-functional
  • Is calming
  • And… is like no other school library!

The Children’s Vision: A ‘Forest of Knowledge’ Emerges

The heart of this project was the children. They didn’t just want a library, they wanted a forest. They craved a space that would transport them to another world, a magical place where stories came to life. We listened intently, capturing their dreams and turning them into a tangible reality.

Building a Forest: The Playscheme Approach

We thought long and hard about the choice of wood, deciding to go with robinia (from the acacia tree) for its natural twists and curves which lend themselves perfectly to create more tree-like structures and therefore replicate the forest theme within the library furniture. The organic shapes and textures of the robinia create a truly immersive experience, bringing the feel of the outdoors inside.

To create depth and the feeling of being immersed in a forest, we wrapped the walls in a vibrant forest print. Imagine stepping into a room where the walls are alive with towering trees and dappled sunlight! But we didn’t stop there. We included a huge mirror to further create the illusion of being in a much larger space, extending the forest and adding a touch of magic.

Functionality Meets Fantasy: A Multi-Purpose Space

We also needed to ensure that the organisation of the design was practical and multifunctional. After all, a school library needs to serve many purposes. At times, there would be 30 children in this space choosing a book. At other times, a whole class enjoying story time. And finally, a space for small groups or where children go to feel safe and regulate their emotions.

We carefully considered the layout, incorporating comfortable seating areas, accessible shelving, and quiet corners for individual reading or reflection. The ‘Forest of Knowledge’ is not just a beautiful space, it’s a functional one, designed to support a variety of learning activities.

A Library Like No Other: The Stamford Bridge Difference

The result? A truly unique themed library that has captured the hearts and imaginations of the entire school community.

“It is a welcoming, high-quality learning space that will inspire curiosity, imagination, and a love for reading in all our children.” – Nicola Massey, Headteacher.

“The children are in awe of how beautiful and immersive the library is.” – Member of staff, Stamford Bridge.

In fact, it has been reported that a Viking, who visited Stamford Bridge in 1066, said… “If only this library had been here when we invaded…we could have murdered a Horrible History book instead of the locals!”
