How St. Peter’s Primary School in Harrogate Transformed Playtime with a Bespoke L-Shaped Playground Shelter

If there were ever a textbook example of what happens when imagination meets craftsmanship, it’s the new L-shaped playground shelter we created for St. Peter’s C of E Primary School in Harrogate. Measuring a generous 9m x 7m x 2.5m, this isn’t just a structure — it’s a multifunctional space that’s redefining what school shelters, playground shelters, and school canopies can be.

Built with care (and a few cups of tea along the way) by our Playscheme team in York, this custom-made shelter brings shade, calm, and creativity to one of Harrogate’s busiest playgrounds.

A Shelter with a Twist (and a Tree!)

When St. Peter’s approached us, they didn’t want an off-the-shelf canopy — they wanted something that would make the most of an awkward corner of their playground… and still work around a very large tree.

Now, we love a design challenge. After all, bespoke is our middle name. (Well, not literally — but we’ve been designing custom school shelters for over 20 years, so we’re used to creating spaces that perfectly fit their surroundings.)

The result? A beautifully crafted L-shaped wooden shelter that curves elegantly around that tree — rather than cutting it down. It’s living proof that when it comes to bespoke playground shelters, you really can have both shade and nature in harmony.

Built to Last (and to Impress)

Every Playscheme project starts with quality materials, and this one was no exception. The shelter is constructed from pressure-treated pine, chosen for its durability, natural aesthetic, and eco-friendly qualities.

The roof is made from laminated green board, a smart, weather-resistant surface that provides shade from the sun and shelter from the rain all year round — essential in unpredictable British weather.

It’s robust enough to handle a Yorkshire downpour and stylish enough to make teachers nod approvingly as they walk by.

More Than Just a Shelter

At first glance, you might think it’s just a place to sit. But take a closer look, and you’ll discover how this structure has transformed everyday school life.

Inside the L-shaped design, there’s loads of room for loads of children — enough space for group play, quiet reflection, and even outdoor learning.

The shelter includes:

• A large chalkboard and magnetic whiteboard for teaching and creativity.
• Locker-style storage units to neatly tuck away playground equipment.
• A 2m outdoor workstation, perfect for crafts, reading, or science experiments.
• Plenty of built-in seating for catching up with friends (or simply catching your breath!).

It’s part play space, part classroom, and part chill-out zone — and the children have already made it their own.

A Calm Corner in a Busy School Day

In today’s schools, children need spaces not just to learn and play, but to breathe. The St. Peter’s shelter provides exactly that — a calm, shaded corner where pupils can regulate their emotions, chat quietly with friends, or simply sit and watch the world go by.

Teachers have told us it’s now one of the most popular places on the playground. And when it rains (as it often does), it quickly becomes the perfect refuge for storytime or a spontaneous outdoor lesson.

One teacher called it “a classroom without walls.” We’ll take that.
