Mead Open Farm: A Bespoke Pirate Galleon That’s Making a Splash Non Bold

Case Study

Mead Open Farm’s New Pirate Ship with Water Cannons!

At Playscheme, we’ve spent more than 20 years crafting bespoke outdoor play experiences—but every so often a project sails straight into legendary territory. Mead Open Farm’s brand-new Pirate Galleon & water play zone is exactly that. Designed and built by our York-based team, this spectacular centrepiece has quickly become one of the UK’s most talked-about pirate playgrounds and a standout example of how water themed play areas can transform family attractions.

Using the hugely characterful Robinia hardwood and detailed theming throughout, this project brings to life an entire world of adventure—complete with water blasters, slides, inclined nets, tunnels, and imagination-fuelled role play spaces that encourage children to captain their own stories. As we like to say in the workshop: “If it doesn’t make you want to shout ‘Ahoy!’—it isn’t pirate enough.”

Designing a Pirate Ship Playground Worthy of the Seven Seas

The bespoke Galleon Ship at Mead Open Farm wasn’t just designed to look beautiful (though it certainly does). It was created to function as a high-capacity, feature-rich, fully themed pirate ship playground with layered play value for a wide age range.
From the uploaded plans, the ship includes:

  • Two stainless steel slides—1m double-width and 1.5m high versions for fast, exciting escapes down the deck
  • A thrilling net tunnel, clatter bridge and scramble nets for physical challenge and adventure
  • Talk tubes, allowing little shipmates to send top-secret messages across the vessel
  • A telescope for spotting sharks, treasure, or parents with snacks
  • A climbing ramp, under-deck routes, stair access, an inclined net tunnel, and a sliding pole
  • Themed rope windows, painted splashes and pirate panels to create a fully immersive storyworld

Constructed primarily from Robinia hardwood, the ship delivers both premium aesthetics and long-term durability. Its natural, quirky shapes allow us to form organic silhouettes—perfect for a ship that looks like it sailed straight out of a storybook. The stainless-steel slides offer robust, low-maintenance performance, while our ropes—engineered with steel cores—ensure the Galleon thrives even under high visitor numbers.

This is the kind of attraction that supports repeat visits—because children want to return again and again to explore every nook of the ship.

Water Cannons, Splashes and Soaked-Through Smiles

Of course, no pirate ship playground is complete without the chance to engage in a little friendly cannon-fire. Mead Open Farm’s Galleon boasts six water spray blasters, activated from three strategically positioned activator posts, encouraging kids to team up, aim, blast and giggle their way through a full maritime skirmish.

These water cannons have rapidly become the biggest “wow” factor on site. One parent told Mead Open Farm:

“My kids stayed in the pirate ship area for nearly two hours—they were soaked, laughing, and absolutely loving the water cannons. We couldn’t drag them away!”

Water play brings a whole new level of engagement to themed environments, and the Pirate Galleon now acts as a living demonstration of how interactive water play areas can boost dwell time, delight families, and encourage repeat visits.

Porous Wet Pour Surfacing: Bringing the ‘Sea’ to the Ship

Around the Galleon, we installed wet pour rubber surfacing in textured, sea-themed colours and graphics inspired by the uploaded plans (212m² of surfacing in this area)

This creates:

  • A safe, accessible, porous surface ideal for high-traffic water-play environments
  • Decorative, swirling ‘waves’ that visually anchor the ship in its watery setting
  • A clean, cohesive design that enhances the theme and improves wayfinding

Visitors don’t just see a pirate ship—they enter a full ocean-themed experience.

A Word From Playscheme’s MC, Steve Danby

We asked Steve Danby—master of ceremonies here at Playscheme—to share his thoughts on the new Galleon and its water-play features:

“For us, the magic is in how water transforms a play space. Add interactivity—buttons, blasters, flowing channels—and suddenly every child becomes an explorer. The Galleon at Mead Open Farm is one of the most exciting water play areas we’ve ever delivered because it doesn’t just look like a ship… it behaves like one. Water, movement, laughter—it’s an adventure from every angle.”
Steve Danby, Playscheme MC

Behind the Scenes: A Plantroom Engineered for Reliability

Delivering a high-performance water play area requires expertise beneath the surface. Our team installed a full main plantroom and advanced water treatment system, ensuring the Pirate Galleon’s water features run safely, consistently and efficiently.

The system includes:

  • Dirty/clean water storage tank
  • Filter pump, duty and standby display pumps
  • Deep bed filtration & specialist media
  • Chemical dosing system for perfect water balance
  • UV sterilisation for top-tier hygiene
  • Automatic water top-up system with intelligent level sensing
  • Full plantroom pipework, valve manifolds, external pipework, pressure testing, control panel, HMI, and waterplay controller
  • Mechanical & electrical installation, commissioning, O&M manual, and client training
  • A secure 20ft shipping-container plantroom with a concrete base for long-term durability

This engineered backbone means Mead Open Farm’s team can operate a complex water play zone easily and safely. In other words: we don’t just build great pirate playgrounds—we make sure the water keeps flowing like the tides themselves.

Families Are Loving It

Early visitor feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. One family told us:

“The pirate ship playground was the highlight of our day. Our children loved the slides and talking through the tubes—and the water cannons kept them playing for ages. We ended up staying much longer than planned!”

That’s exactly what themed play is designed to achieve: extended dwell time, memorable stories, return visits, and happy families.

Why Themed Water Play Areas Like This Are Transforming UK Farm Attractions

Attractions across the UK are increasingly turning to themed water play areas, pirate playgrounds, and high-impact pirate ship playgrounds to differentiate their offer. The Mead Open Farm project highlights several key benefits:

  1. Increased Dwell Time & Visitor Satisfaction

Children stay longer and explore deeper when water elements and themed structures combine. The Galleon offers endless replay value.

  1. All-Season Appeal

Water play isn’t just for heatwaves. With activators, controlled systems and porous surfacing, operators can tailor usage year-round.

  1. Strong Theming = Strong Branding

A custom Robinia structure becomes a landmark attraction—and a shareable moment across social media.

  1. Revenue Influence

More time on-site leads to more café visits, repeat visits, and enhanced visitor experience scores.

  1. Durability & Low Maintenance

Using Robinia hardwood, stainless steel, and steel-core ropes ensures long-term resilience and value.

In Summary: A Pirate Playground That Sets a New Benchmark

Mead Open Farm’s new Pirate Galleon & water play zone is a flagship example of what can be achieved when creativity, engineering and storytelling come together. From its bespoke Robinia construction to its interactive water cannons, tunnels, slides, and sea-themed surfacing, this project invites families into a world of discovery and play.
