“Turrets, Towers, and Toddlers: Why York’s Red Tower Playground Is the Crown Jewel of Themed Play Areas!”
Case Study
A Historic Makeover with a Playful Twist
If you’ve ever strolled along York’s famous city walls, you’ll have passed the Red Tower — a 15th-century fortification standing proud near the city’s edge. But look again! Nestled just beside it is a brand-new landmark in its own right: The Red Tower play area — a shining example of a community play area that’s not just safe and sustainable, but seriously imaginative.
And who made it happen? That’d be us — Playscheme, York-based playground design and manufacturing specialists with nearly three decades of experience in creating play areas that are a bit different.
The Red Tower play area was an opportunity to do what we do best: take inspiration from a local setting and turn it into something playful, purposeful, and packed with personality.
Local Project, Legendary Design
They say you should start at home — and with this project located a mere 6.4 miles from our workshop in Elvington, we didn’t have to go far. In fact, the only thing closer to the site than our workshop is York’s city wall itself!
Designed by our in-house team, the Red Tower play area draws direct inspiration from the historical Red Tower it sits beside. We’re talking turrets, archways, cruciform arrow slits, walkways and the kind of detail that gets both kids and adults craning their necks.
This isn’t your average roundabout-and-climbing-frame set-up. This is storytelling through timber. It’s what themed play areas were made for.
Built to Last (and Built for Fun)
Our expert carpenters hand-built the structure using robinia hardwood, chosen for its natural durability and long lifespan (we’re talking a solid 10-year warranty and no need for chemical treatment). Robinia’s rustic appearance also perfectly complements the historic surroundings, making it look like it’s been part of the city for centuries.
- Sustainably sourced timber? ✔️
- Natural preservatives (no chemicals)? ✔️
- Carbon ‘baby sized’ footprint due to ultra-local production? ✔️
As for the slide — we didn’t just slap any old one in. We engineered it from stainless steel, giving it a whopping 25-year guarantee, and yes, it was also made just down the road in Elvington.
Naturally, every component meets the full requirements of BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177, because fun should never come at the expense of safety.
A Much-Needed Play Space for the Community
Before this project, there was… not much. For years, the Red Tower site was in desperate need of regeneration. The local community — especially young families — had few safe outdoor spaces where children could let off steam, stretch their limbs, and (importantly) meet other local kids.
In the words of Former Lord Mayor Janet Looker,
“Local families have needed this for so long!”
We couldn’t agree more.
Now, the area is buzzing with life — and laughter. The playground is more than just a fun space; it’s a meeting place, a fitness spot, a backdrop for imagination and roleplay, and even a photo opportunity for tourists (no, really).
It’s Not Just Us Saying It…
Let’s hear from some of the Red Tower’s newest (and loudest) fans:
“It’s really good!”
— Reuben Beal, age six, grinning from ear to ear mid-slide
“We live in Navigation Road, and I think it’s wonderful.”
— Victoria Beal, Reuben’s mum
“It’s a beautiful design. You can see how it reflects the city walls and the Red Tower. It’s just perfect for this place – a really brilliant playground.”
— Janet Looker, Former Lord Mayor of York
If that doesn’t prove we hit the (castle) nail on the head, we don’t know what will.
Play Value Fit for a King
From a play value perspective, the Red Tower ticks all the boxes (and then some):
- Climbing, sliding, crawling, and hiding — kids are fully engaged in physical activity.
- Social interaction — designed with multiple entry points and gathering spaces.
- Themed exploration — turrets become castles, towers become pirate ships, and archways become portals to who-knows-where.
In short, this isn’t just a playground. It’s a story engine.
The design encourages movement, creativity, roleplay and collaboration — everything children need to develop physically, emotionally, and socially.
Why Choose a Themed Play Area Like This One?
If you’re someone (like a local council, visitor attraction, or farm park owner) thinking about installing a playground that’s not just swings and slides — you’re in the right place.
A themed play area like the Red Tower:
- Tells a story.
- Reflects its surroundings.
- Draws visitors in — and keeps them there.
- Offers long-term value, not just a quick thrill.
- Becomes a community asset — not just equipment.
People don’t forget play spaces like this. And neither do children.
From Little Arrows, Big Castles Grow
If The Red Tower has got your mind racing with ideas (a dragon-themed playground, a seaside galleon, a secret woodland fort?), we’d love to help bring them to life.
We’re not about cookie-cutter playgrounds. We’re about creativity, quality, safety and charm — all rooted in storytelling and play value. Whether you’re regenerating a public space or adding a wow-factor attraction to your venue, Playscheme is here to make it happen.
