West Heslerton School Playground Takes Centre Stage

January 2016 - One of our last projects of last year was the transformation of the playground at West Heslerton CE Primary School in Malton, which won funding through the Awards for All Scheme with a little help from the Playscheme team.

Visiting the school at the very start of the school year in 2015, both the school and Playscheme were able to identify key problems with their existing facilities. They already had an existing trim trail, however it was coming to the end of its lifespan and desperately needed to be replaced, as well as the school grounds needing a touch of revitalisation.

After presenting a small workshop on adventure trails, as well as the features and benefits that each piece of the equipment had, the school saw the value in updating their facilities. With input from the children via a question and answer exercise, we were then able to sketch ideas based on what their ideal playground would look like.

The most obvious requirement was that they didn’t have an area for role play, and this came out of discussions with both the teachers and the children. Because of this, the main feature of the adventure trail was incorporating a stage.

The whole project for West Heslerton was bespoke to their needs, included a unit which gave them climbing, crawling, a balcony and a stage area for performance and role play. This tailor-made piece of equipment then linked with the rest of the adventure trail which includes challenging equipment such as a log roller, swinging traverse and swinging steps, all of which were suggested by the children of the school within our special focus groups.

The adventure trail itself was dependent on West Heslerton obtaining funding from Awards for All, which we helped them achieve. Awards for All, run by the Big Lottery Fund gives groups a simple way to get small grants of up to £10,000, raising aspirations of local communities. West Heslerton CE Primary School received a total of £9,969 from the Big Lottery Fund to refurbish their outdoor play area.

The project was installed just before the Christmas break and was opened by Tony Peers and the cast of Dick Whittington Pantomine from the Scarborough Spa.

Headteacher of West Heslerton, Rachel Wells said of their new adventure trail and performance stage: “The children were really excited that the pantomime stars were able to join us for the opening ceremony. The play area is a great new facility for the pupils and it looks fantastic. The children are really enjoying using the play area – it is a brilliant asset for the school.”
