Possible School Playground Funding Opportunities
Listed below are websites which set out possible grants/funding that your school may be entitled to in order to develop your playground.

Surestart publishes a comprehensive A-Z Funding Directory that lists all the available funding, with details about how to and who can apply for such funding. There is also a link to the new LEA Funding System, details of which were announced on 5th December 2006.

From this site, access Grants, then Supergrounds. Supergrounds has been developed by The Royal Bank of Scotland and Nat West in partnership with Learning Through Landscapes and Groundwork. Over the next three years Supergrounds will transform 450 school playgrounds into fun and stimulating places where children can learn and play in safety. From this site, download the Word document in Capital Expenditure. The list of Permitted Expenditure specifies “On site shelter for pedestrians (eg parents waiting, pupils waiting for school buses in the school)”. Funding could be obtained for one of our range of outdoor shelters/classrooms.

Under their Children’s Play initiative, the Big Lottery Fund has made available £124 million to local authority areas to develop playgrounds. This programme opened to applications in March 2006, with first grants being announced in Autumn 2006. There will be a further two deadlines for the submission of applications: March 2007 and September 2007.
Grants will be between £10,000 and £250,000, for projects lasting up to 5 years, representing all or part of the total project costs. You can also contact the BIG Advice Line on 0845 4 10 20 30 where you can obtain a Playful Ideas pack and guidance notes.
Special Needs Schools

Wooden spoon aims to enhance the quality and prospect of life for children and young people in the UK and Ireland who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially. Grants are available to special needs schools, generally in the region of £20k to £100k, representing 25-100% of total project costs.

Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards assists organisations supporting children’s welfare and children’s educational projects, including special needs schools. Grants are in the form of one-off payments in the region of £1,500 to £5,000.
